Some time ago, the world-famous Bloomberg Businessweek (an American business magazine) reported stunning news that is unlikely to please many people. The medicine for treatment of stomach ulcers, heartburn Zantac can provoke cancer! But most importantly, the company manufacturer GSK (global pharmaceutical company) knew about such risks of the drug and hid it for more than 40 years from consumers. According to journalists, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration – an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, one of the federal executive departments) was also aware of this problem. However, the FDA still approved Zantac as a stomach ulcer and heartburn medicine for sale. Over the years, this medicine has become the best-selling one for treating such diseases in the world!
As it turns out, the main active ingredient in Zantac, ranitidine, is a huge danger! In 2019, pharmacists of the American pharmacy Valisure found carcinogenic impurities in the composition of “Zantac”. Experts found out that ranitidine decomposes over time and forms the highly toxic chemical N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA). In addition, NDMA is a dangerous cancer-causing carcinogen. This carcinogen has been known to scientists for over 60 years! It has been used to induce cancer in experimental animals! And a dose of 2 grams can kill a person in a few days!
In 2020, the FDA conducted its own study, after which it insisted that all variants of Zantac be taken off the market. Tens of thousands of claims have been filed in US courts! However, it is not easy to prove that the cancer cells of a particular patient were formed due to taking the medicine. And experts of the company – manufacturer GSK, recognising the presence of a dangerous carcinogen, claim that its amount in the medicine is minimal, and therefore, completely safe!
