One of the most common and life-threatening cancers is breast cancer! According to experts, women who abuse alcoholic beverages experience breast cancer much more often than those of the fair sex who do not drink alcohol at all or use it quite rarely.

The official website of the World Health Organization’s Regional Office for Europe reports that Europe ranks first in the world in newly diagnosed cases of breast cancer. Every day, 1579 women are diagnosed with this type of cancer in the European Region. Oncologists say that breast cancer is most often diagnosed in women who are very fond of drinking. Thus, according to estimates by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, in 2020 alcohol consumption was the cause of almost 40,000 new cases of breast cancer in Europe. In total, more than 2 million cases of breast cancer were registered in the world in 2020, and 100 thousand of them are associated with alcohol consumption.

“Many people, including many women, are unaware that breast cancer is the most common women’s cancer in the world that is caused by alcohol. People should be aware that they can reduce their risk of cancer by cutting down on alcohol. The type, quality or cost of alcoholic beverages is irrelevant here,” says Dr Marilis Corbeks, Senior Technical Specialist for Noncommunicable Diseases at WHO/Europe. Therefore, WHO urges the female half of humanity to be careful in the use of alcoholic beverages, and countries – to increase excises on alcohol, limit the time for the sale of alcoholic beverages and their advertising in the media, and also place warnings about the dangers of alcohol for health on labels.
