Staff at the Inna Charitable Foundation continue to review useful scientific material that contributes to cancer prevention. One such is a report published in the journal Nutrition and Cancer. A team of scientists from the State University at Buffalo (New York, USA), led by epidemiologist Gauri Desai, studied the impact of women’s diets on the development of breast cancer. To do this, the researchers requested medical records from medical centres in Puerto Rico. This island nation was not chosen by chance: here women suffer from malignant breast tumours less often than on the American mainland. As a result, 314 women aged 30 to 79 years who were diagnosed with breast cancer between 2008 and 2014 were identified. Also included in the analysis was a group of 346 healthy women who were around the same age and lived in the same area. The scientists tested how the incidence of breast cancer among these women depended on dietary intake, making adjustments for age, education level, family history, body mass index, smoking history and so on. Dietary intake was assessed using a questionnaire.

The analysis of the materials showed a very interesting correlation between breast cancer risk and diet – women who ate Sofrito sauce twice a day had a 67% lower risk of developing cancer compared to those who did not eat it at all!

It should be noted that Sofrito is the most popular dish in Puerto Rico. It belongs to Latin American, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese cuisine. Its main ingredients are garlic and onions! Therefore, scientists quite rightly believe that these two vegetables are very helpful in the prevention of breast cancer. This is due to the two classes of chemical compounds they are rich in: flavonols and organosulfur compounds, the anti-tumour effect of which has been proven by scientists before.

Thus, despite the specific taste, smell of onions and garlic, the benefits of these vegetables are undeniable! So, try making Sofrito yourself. Maybe you will like it and this sauce will become a permanent dish on your table! Delicious and healthy!
