Malnutrition is one of the important factors that increase the risk of cancer. This is well known to oncologists in EU countries. In order to prevent such diseases in the European Union, a new standard for the content of lead and cadmium in food is urgently introduced. The information is posted on the official website of the European Union. It is known that lead is widely used in production. It enters the human body mainly through food and the environment. And cadmium is a toxic heavy metal used in agriculture and industry, and is indirectly recognized as a genotoxic carcinogen.

The new standards determine the maximum permissible levels of lead in many products – baby food, spices (eg, turmeric), in the production of wines and liqueurs, in salt, mushrooms. And the use of cadmium will be limited in the cultivation of fruits, vegetables, grains and oilseeds, chocolate and cocoa products.

EU Commissioner for Health Stella Kyriakides says: “We put the consumer in the first place. We know that poor nutrition leads to cancer, so we make our food safer and healthier. ”

The levels of these substances are based on current scientific data on the harm of cadmium and lead to the human body. Such changes are aimed at the activities of farms, agro-industrial companies. The new standards will come into force – for lead from August 30, and for cadmium from August 31.
